Wuhou Shrine
Wuhou Shrine (also known as Wuhou Temple or Temple of Marquis Wu) is a premier historical site located in downtown Chengdu, Sichuan Province. Dedicated to Zhuge Liang (181–234 AD), the legendary Chancellor of the Shu Han Kingdom during the Three Kingdoms period, it stands as China's most famous memorial temple for a subject-matter official.
Unlike most Chinese temples that honor emperors or deities, Wuhou Shrine pays tribute to a statesman and military strategist who became synonymous with loyalty, wisdom, and devotion. The temple complex was first built during the Western Jin Dynasty (265–316 AD) and has been expanded and restored over the centuries, most notably during the Ming and Qing dynasties.
A Unique Temple – Ruler and Subject Together
What makes Wuhou Shrine truly special is that it also houses the Zhaolie Temple , dedicated to Liu Bei (Emperor Zhaolie of Shu Han), Zhuge Liang's lord. Entering from the main gate, visitors first encounter Liu Bei's hall, then walk further to reach Zhuge Liang's hall. This front-ruler-behind-subject layout is rare in Chinese history and symbolizes the mutual respect and loyalty between the two men — a bond celebrated for over 1,800 years.

Zhuge Liang is revered across East Asia not just as a military genius but as a symbol of selfless dedication.
