People's Park of Chengdu
People's Park of Chengdu (Renmin Gongyuan), located in the heart of downtown Chengdu, is far more than just a green space. It is the city’s "living room" — a vibrant, authentic window into the leisurely lifestyle for which Chengdu is famous.
Established in 1911, the park was originally called Shaocheng Park, as it was built on the former site of the Lesser City of Chengdu dating back to the Qin Dynasty. After the founding of modern China, it was renamed People's Park. Covering an area of over 112,000 square meters, it is one of the oldest and most beloved public parks in the city.
What to See and Experience
The Heming Tea House (Heming Teahouse): Perhaps the park's most iconic feature. This century-old traditional tea house allows visitors to experience Chengdu’s famous "tea culture" firsthand. Order a cup of jasmine tea, sit in a bamboo chair at a wooden table, and watch locals play mahjong, chat, or have their ears cleaned — an ancient folk service.
The Memorial Monument to Railway Protection Movement: A significant historical landmark. This monument commemorates the Railway Protection Movement of 1911, a pivotal event that helped trigger the Xinhai Revolution, which overthrew the Qing Dynasty.
The Artificial Lake and Boating: A serene lake with paddle boats offers a peaceful escape from the city buzz. Surrounding willows and pavilions create a classic Chinese garden atmosphere.
The Bonsai Garden: Home to hundreds of exquisite potted landscapes, some over a century old, showcasing the refined art of Sichuan-style bonsai.
The Square for Mass Activities: Every morning and afternoon, locals gather here to practice tai chi, dance, sing traditional opera, or perform calligraphy with water on the stone ground. This is where you see the true rhythm of Chengdu daily life.
The Marriage Market: On weekends, a spontaneous "matchmaking corner" appears, where parents post resumes of their unmarried children, hoping to find suitable partners. It is a fascinating cultural phenomenon unique to Chengdu.
Why Visit People's Park?
Unlike commercial attractions, People's Park offers an unfiltered, genuine look at how Chengdu residents relax and socialize. It is slow-paced, inclusive, and deeply cultural. Whether you want to sip tea like a local, understand Chengdu's history, or simply enjoy a tranquil afternoon under century-old ginkgo trees, this park is unmissable.
