  • Day2 Chengdu

Activities for today: Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding, Jinsha Site Museum, People's Park

This morning, we'll start bright and early with a visit to the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding to see these adorable creatures in their naturalistic habitat. Arriving early not only gives us a chance to see the pandas at their most active—during their morning feeding time—but also helps us beat the crowds and avoid the long queues at this beloved attraction.

In the early afternoon, we'll continue our journey through time at the Jinsha Site Museum. Built directly atop the archaeological ruins, this fascinating museum preserves the legacy of the ancient Shu Kingdom—"Shu" being the historical name for Sichuan, which the province is still abbreviated as today. Flourishing between 12th century BC and 7th century AD, Jinsha is renowned for its mysterious Shu culture and unique bronze civilization. As we explore the exhibits, we'll encounter an extraordinary collection of artifacts: intricate objects crafted from gold, bronze, jade, stone, ivory, lacquered wood, and pottery. These treasures offer a vivid window into the daily lives of people who walked this land 3,000 years ago. The undisputed star of the collection is the breathtaking Gold Foil of Sun and Immortal Bird, an artifact rich with legends and symbolism etched into its delicate patterns.

Late in the afternoon, we'll return to the heart of the city to experience local life at People's Park. Here, you can truly immerse yourself in Chengdu's famously laid-back culture. Find a seat at an open-air tea house, order a pot of fragrant jasmine tea, and simply watch the world go by. Observe as locals indulge in their favorite pastimes—some napping in the shade, others fiercely competitive over games of Mahjong, couples gracefully dancing, friends giving impromptu neck massages, and elderly calligraphers painting elegant characters with water on the pavement stones. It's the perfect place to unwind and feel the rhythm of daily life in Chengdu.

Activities for today: Wuhou Temple, Jinli Street, airport transfer

This morning, we'll immerse ourselves in the rich tapestry of Chengdu's history with a visit to Wuhou Temple and the adjacent Jinli Ancient Street, both nestled in a leafy, atmospheric part of the city.

Wuhou Temple, first built during the Western Jin period (265–316), stands as a lasting tribute to Zhuge Liang, the legendary military and political strategist who served as Prime Minister of the Shu Han State during the Three Kingdoms era (220–280). As we wander through the serene halls, we'll encounter the Zhuge Liang Memorial Temple, the Hall of Liu Bei (founder of the Shu Han state), and statues honoring other key figures of the kingdom. The site also houses precious cultural relics, including ancient stone inscriptions and tablets. One of its most remarkable features is the Hui Mausoleum of Liu Bei—it is exceptionally rare in China to find an emperor and his subjects enshrined together within the same temple complex.

Just steps away lies Jinli Ancient Street, a vibrant pedestrian street that brings the charm of traditional Western Sichuan architecture to life. The name "Jinli," dating back to the Han dynasty, poetically means "making perfection more perfect." This area echoes the glory of the original Jinli Street, which was one of the oldest and most commercialized thoroughfares in the history of the Shu state, renowned throughout the country during the Qin, Han, and Three Kingdoms periods. Today, Jinli buzzes with energy as a hub of local culture and urban life. Wander past teahouses, theaters, and handicraft stores; peek into bustling restaurants and lively bars; and sample an array of local snacks from street-side vendors. It's the perfect place to soak up Chengdu's vibrant atmosphere and pick up some last-minute souvenirs.

After soaking in the sights and sounds of Jinli, your memorable 3-day Chengdu tour comes to a close. You'll be transferred to the airport for your onward journey, taking with you the warmth of the people, the taste of the tea, and the unforgettable image of giant pandas peacefully munching bamboo. It's time to say goodbye to your guide and driver, but surely not goodbye to the stories you'll carry home.
